Toomas Toomsoo

Overview

I am a clinician-scientist in neurology focused on neurotechnology for Parkinson’s disease. I lead large clinical programs while running a translational research agenda that integrates advanced brain imaging, clinical genetics, and microbiome science to improve diagnosis, prognosis, and care.

Current Roles

I serve as Head of the Internal Medicine Clinic at Confido Medical Centre (2022–present), following leadership as Head of the Center of Neurology at Confido (2021–2022) and previously East Tallinn Central Hospital (2006–2021). Academically, I was Visiting Professor at Tallinn University’s School of Natural Sciences and Health (2020–2024) and currently Professor of Neurology (2025–2029).

Research Focus and Neurotech

My research targets Parkinson’s disease through three interconnected neurotech-enabled approaches:

Advanced neuroimaging: I specialize in transcranial brain sonography, the focus of my PhD (University of Tartu, 2019; supervisors Toomas Asser, Pille Taba, Daniela Berg).
Clinical genetics and molecular analysis: I apply exome and other sequencing methods to uncover risk loci and mechanistic pathways.
VMicrobiome profiling: I study gut–brain interactions, linking microbial signatures with motor and non-motor manifestations.
My work spans clinical genetics and molecular health sciences, including biochemistry, genetics, microbiology, biotechnology, molecular and cell biology, biophysics, and bioinformatics.

Translational Program and Mentorship

I bridge clinic and lab by embedding research workflows into patient pathways and training students in integrated neurotech methods.
